Battery-powered monorail systems

Scharf self-propelled drives for underground mines enable a cost-effective transport of men and material in branched roadway systems and on long single tracks.

The battery-powered locomotive type BZ 43-2-31 is the result of the consistent further development of existing product lines. It is an electro mechanical traction engine for the operation of monorails underground.

System components

Drive unit

Each of the two drive units comprises the travelling gear with gearbox and two or four frictional wheels, a brake scissor, and a DC inverse speed motor. Two easily replaceable transmissions are optionally available for the two drives. Integrated into the first drive unit is the electronic control unit while the second drive unit houses the hydraulic equipment for releasing the brakes, pressing on the wheels as well as for special functions such as the operation of the hydraulic lifting beams. The transmission of power to the rails is by frictional wheels provided with Vulkollan lining which are pressed onto the stem of the rails.

Center part

The center part comprises the carrying frame for the travelling battery which is guided on two separate trolleys with their own brake scissor each. As sources of energy either batteries with a capacity of 600 Ah or 720 Ah can be used. Each battery box is equipped with 54 high-efficiency cells CSM and at its front end has a battery monitoring device, a main switch, and a plug-in unit which ensures that the electrical connection is made automatically once the battery is located under the carrying frame of the trolley.

Operator's cabin

The operator's cabins at both ends of the train are provided with a control panel, a headlight, and an acoustic signalling device each. The control commands are transmitted to the machine part via an intrinsically safe audio frequency control. The control panel is located next to the driver's seat. The operating lever is used to select direction and speed and to actuate the operating and parking brakes. For starting and stopping on a gradient an additional pedal brake switch is provided which permits to use the parking brake independent of the position of the lever. An involuntary movement of the battery-powered locomotive or the train can be prevented by first selecting an adequate motor torque by means of the lever and releasing the parking brake afterwards.
